Pareve Cream of Chicken Soup

Do you have a recipe that calls for a can of cream of chicken (or mushroom, or celery) as an ingredient? Use this simple replacement to make it pareve and you'll also save money and time as well.

Add a cube of chicken or a spoonful of Mushroom soup mix (Osem brand) if needed.

  • 3 Tbsp margarine
  • 3 Tbsp flour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 cup soy or rice milk


  1. Melt margarine over medium to medium-high heat in a small saucepan.
  2. Add flour and salt, cooking and stirring with a whisk until bubbly. Stir in the liquid and cook until thickened.
  3. Once thick remove from flame or it will burn. These ingredients will yield enough to replace one can of cream of chicken. You can add in bits of chicken or mushroom if you like, but if you're using this as part of a larger recipe, that's usually not necessary.
